Sensory Wellbeing Hub
PROJECT SUMMARY
Multi-sensory environments are believed helpful for individuals with developmental disabilities and other neurological disorders; yet, limited evidence about what makes productive multi-sensory environments is available. This project aimed to realize and evaluate a sensory wellbeing hub--a freestanding flexible and modular interior design solution housing sensory interventions for adolescents with developmental disabilities (e.g., autism). The design and research methods presented here were conducted through an iterative design research process. The sensory hub consists of three zones—active, respite, and sensory cocoon zones. A sensory cocoon prototype explored processes for translating design objectives into physical form using algorithmic digital modeling, digital fabrication, and prefabrication techniques. The efficacy of the hub was evaluated with an academic-year-long research study and identified sensory interventions with compression quality were most often utilized. |
